Welcome to KanjiFlashcard.com
Our welcome email describing site features.

This is an email. SO MANY WORDS (please read).

You now have access to the most complete Japanese dictionary currently available on the internet, and also a powerful and flexible flashcard learning system.

Our dictionary includes these data sources:

  • Jim Bream Dictionary (one awesome guy, btw)
  • Tatoeba Example Sentences (did you know that “tatoeba” means “for example”? So really this says “For Example Example Sentences”.)
  • Alternate definitions from JDict
  • Alternate (Japanese) definitions from Jiten

The definitions will include not only the Kanji, english meaning and pronunciation, but also: Notation of whether a word is common. Or vulgar. Whatever.

  • The “Japanese Student” grade of each Kanji in the word. Because yeah, you can be smarter than a Japanese first grader - if you study.
  • The Onyomi and Kunyomi for each Kanji
  • Other common words that contain the same Kanji.
  • Example sentences in both Japanese and English. Context is king!

Regarding flashcards, you may customize what you would like to display.

For the front of the card, you must display the Kanji if it exists, but additionally you may add:

  • The kana pronunciation
  • The meaning in English
  • Onyomi
  • Kunyomi
  • Japanese example sentence
  • A hint that you add yourself
  • A mnemonic that you add yourself
  • An image returned by Google image search, related to the meaning of the card. Such a good idea. What could go wrong?

For the back of the card, you may display:

  • The meaning in English
  • The kana pronunciation
  • The Onyomi
  • The Kunyomi
  • Kyōiku Grade Levels with Common Words that use this Kanji
  • Example Sentences in Japanese
  • The English translation of the Japanese sentences
  • Jiten Japanese dictionary meaning and japanese phrases
  • A place to enter a Mnemonic or hint. Just for you, whatever helps you to remember. Be as snarky as you want, we won’t tell.

You can easily turn these options on or off.

In addition to global groups, you have access to several free products.

A product is a bunch of cards and also a stats page with a goal date. The goal can be customized, so you can learn at your own pace and know whether or not you are on track. You have access to free ones because we want you to see how awesome they are.

Oh, and there’s an interesting blog. Every week we update it. Usually it is language related. Check it out. Or don’t. Whatever.

If you decide to upgrade to the pro level, you will gain these features:

Make cards by pasting text into the analyzer.

Do you need flashcards for a news article? Just drop the article into the parser and click submit. Within moments you will have a deck built specifically for that article. No more adding flashcards “one by one.” Are you worried about decks with duplicate cards? You can have as many decks as you want, and each time you drill, your score is passed back to the master occurence of that Kanji.

No more having to synchronize your decks!

Easily import existing decks from Anki and other sources

Any deck that can be exported to a “.txt” file can be imported

All products will be free

Try them out. Like them? Great! Done with them? Delete! Then get them back again. You can be fickle. That’s fine.

Combine groups of cards

Drill the way you want, when you want. You do you, baby.

Share groups of cards with others

Your friends get an email with a link to the group of cards to drill, even if they have the free version. You can humbly accept their gratitude later.

Get a customized weekly email

Know where you are on every group and product. Know your hard kanji. Don’t want to know? Sheesh. Opt out.

Do you do the twitter thingy? We will tweet your Kanji to you!

Give us your twitter handle and we will tweet to you the Kanji you need to review the most. We’re doing this just for you, because you’re special like that. Reviewing Kanji in the middle of the day, completely out of context, is a great way to reinforce what you are learning. Or procrastinate from other chores. Whatever.

Please enjoy the site!
